Why 4K lets you sit closer than 1080p
4K has 4 times the pixels of 1080p on the same screen area. Each pixel is smaller, which means the pixel grid is less visible at closer distances. This lets you sit closer to a 4K TV than a 1080p TV of the same size without seeing individual pixels.
The practical result is a wider optimal viewing zone. A 65-inch 1080p TV starts showing visible pixels at around 5 feet. A 65-inch 4K TV only shows visible pixels below about 3.5 feet. You gain usable seating space without visual compromise.

Apartment living room (8 to 10 feet)
An apartment living room typically puts the sofa at 8 to 10 feet from the wall. A 55-inch to 65-inch TV is the right size range. A 55-inch at 9 feet sits within the optimal zone. A 65-inch at 8 feet is also in range and gives a more cinematic feel.
Large living room (10 to 14 feet)
A large living room or open-plan space puts seating at 10 to 14 feet. For full 4K benefit at 12 feet, you need a 75-inch or larger TV. A 65-inch at 12 feet puts you near the maximum distance where 4K advantage is still marginally visible. Go 75 or 85 inches in a large room.

If you know your viewing distance: multiply it in feet by 0.84 to get the recommended screen size in inches. Example: 8 feet multiplied by 0.84 gives 67 inches, so consider a 65-inch or 75-inch TV.
If you know your desired TV size: multiply the screen size in inches by 1.2 to get the recommended minimum viewing distance in inches, then divide by 12 for feet. Example: 65 inches multiplied by 1.2 gives 78 inches, or 6.5 feet minimum.
